HARGEISA– After nine years in office, the outgoing Mayor of Hargeisa, Abdirahman Mohmud Aidid alias “Soltelco”, on Sunday, has announced that he has relinquished his bid for Hargeisa mayor for the second time running.

Ex-mayor has said that he decided to give up seeking mayoral re-election following the decision made by Somaliland President H.E Musa Bihi Abdi. Mr. Soltelco has sent congratulatory on the newly elected councilor by the name of Abdikarim Ahmed Moge who has thrown his hat into the ring as a candidate for the mayor after he was chosen as member of Hargeisa local council. Former mayor has appealed to the newly elected councilors to throw their support behind Abdikarim and vote for him once the new members of the council holds its first meeting. He called on his supporters to respect his decision of relinquishing his bid for the mayor. He also reiterated that he will be a member of the local council and won’t resign. Mr. Soltelco has debunked rumors of leaving ruling Kulmiye party and pledged to remain within the party. Ruling Kulmiye party was badly defeated in the recently concluded local government and parliamentary elections. The two main opposition parties secured majority seats both in the parliament and the local councils in mayor towns in Somaliland. The two opposition parties have established a new alliance to secure the speakership as well as the mayors of the towns in the country. Abdikarim Ahmed Moge is the front runner among the candidates who are vying for the position.
