Europe Day celebrates peace and unity in Europe. In Mogadishu it was celebrated on May 2nd in the premises of the EU Delegation to Somalia.

It was a great day. The Somali Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Isse Awad was the guest of honour. Many other Somali officials and friends, as well as representatives from the international community working in Somalia, joined the celebrations.

As part of the EU family in Mogadishu, EUCAP Somalia participated in the celebrations along the two “sister missions” EUTM Somalia and EU NAVFOR Atalanta.

EUCAP Somalia will also join the EU Day celebration in Brussels on May 4th.

The original date of the EU Day celebrations is May 9th and it marks the anniversary of the historical ‘Schuman declaration‘. At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations unthinkable.

His vision was to create a European institution that would pool and manage coal and steel production. A treaty creating such a body was signed just under a year later. Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.
