Somaliland government announced on Wednesday the commencement of voter registration exercise ahead of the upcoming parliament and local council elections.

Parliament and local council polls were postponed for reasons pertaining to protracted disagreement between the incumbent party of Kulmiye and Wadani and UCID opposition parties of Somaliland. The current parliament was elected in 2010.
Wadani party, the main opposition party in Somaliland demanded that the electoral commission be disbanded after the 2017 presidential polls where Kulmiye party flag bearer, the current Somaliland president badly defeated Wadani presidential contender, Abdirahman Irro in the polls.
The number of Somaliland citizens who will be eligible for voter registration remains unknown. The electoral commission recently conducted mock voter registration drive in Odweyne and Baligubadle towns.
