Video was widely circulated of the execution of soldier in Beled Hawo

Security forces in Beled Hawo in Gedo region on Saturday executed by firing squad a soldier who was convicted by a court on Thursday that he intentionally murdered Abdirahman Ali who was an auto rickshaw driver. Local residents were furious over the murder of the young man which took place on Friday. Local residents staged a demonstration demanding that the soldier who killed the auto rickshaw driver must be brought before the justice.

The local residents prevented the trading centers to be opened while tension was running high in Beled Hawo. The security forces who nabbed the soldier brought him before Beled Hawo district court on Friday while sentencing him to death by firing squad.

The soldier was taken to the execution site which lies in the outskirts of Beled Hawo town in order to be killed. The family of the auto-rickshaw driver asked the authorities to execute the soldier who killed their son, and the district court accepted.

There was no a problem when it comes to the family demanding the execution of the soldier, but what has become a story of the day was once a video showing the execution of the soldier was disseminated in the social media and the local residents were heartbroken.

The father of the murdered young man appeared on the video who was among the squad who carried out the execution. He was seen opening fire at the soldier. The father was given direction on how to shoot the soldier to death. The young soldier was named Shucayb Jiirow.

As for the rules and regulations of the courts in Somalia, it is prohibited to record a live video while the execution of the soldier who murdered the auto-rickshaw driver was carried out. People reacted while strongly criticizing Beled Hawo district court for the incident.

Beled Hawo district court authority has not so far issued a statement regarding who authorized to record the video of the execution of the soldier who killed the auto-rickshaw driver. Residents pointed out that the incident was new to Somalia although another incident occurred in 2006 in Mogadishu where a court in South and Central Somalia displayed a video in which a man was killing another man using a knife.
