Puntland confirmed that its forces detained a member of Al-Shabab militant who absconded from a prison in North of Galkayo. This man and three other inmates absconded on the 7th of May, 2024 from the prison after armed forces court sentenced them to death by firing squad. The security forces nabbed Mr. Barkhad Awil Hirsi on the 7th of August, 2024, who was among four inmates who escaped from the prison. On the 17th of August, 2024, Mr. Barkhad Awil Hirsi with other seven members were executed in the execution park in the outskirts of Galkayo.
The man who was arrested last night is named Abdikani Sulieman Jama alias Sayloor. Puntland authority was pursuing behind Mr. Sayloor and two other fugitives. Mr. Sayloor was arrested while in Bacaadweyne settlement in South of Mudug province. Galmudug security forces captured Sayloor and handed him over to Puntland.
Puntland and Galmudug have security cooperation in the past couple of years. Puntland Police Command said that the local residents in Wisil and Bacaadweyne settlements assisted Galmudug security forces to apprehend Mr. Sayloor who was hiding there.
A statement issued by Puntland Police said that the operation was cautiously planned which was jointly carried out. Police officers and the local residents living in Wisil and Bacaadweyne settlements led the capture of Sayloor who was hiding from law enforcement agencies and was hiding inside Mudug province. The statement went on to say that Abdikani Suleiman Jama Sayloor who was sentenced to death by a court and was among a network that carried out planned assassinations in Galkayo and its environs.
The statement added that he escaped from police detention. Puntland security forces were following Mr. Sayloor and placed a bounty money on his head and finally succeeded to arrest the fugitive while in Bacaadweyne in Galmudug state. The statement further said that he is in custody at Central Police Station and is awaiting to be executed.
Saylor was a football star while people were flabbergasted after the security agencies arrested him and Adde Abdilahi Mohamed who were responsible for the murder of the journalist Jamal Faarah Adan on the 1st of March, 2021 which took place in Galkayo.
The court of the armed forces sentenced Mr. Sayloor, Adde and other members to death on the 26th of March, 2023. The court convicted them of carrying out the assassinations and explosions in Galkayo. Adde was among ten members who were executed by firing squad on the 17th of August, 2024.
Two members named Abdullahi Faisal Hussein Abuu Jonge and Abdirahman Awal Mohamed are fugitives and their whereabouts are not known after they absconded from a prison in Galkayo in 2024. Puntland police offered a reward of up to $ 20, 000 to individuals who bring information pertaining to whereabouts of the fugitives.
