The U.S. Gov’t and Somaliland held discussions and Trump’s administration is expected to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent state as reported by the Financial Times Newspaper.
The Newspaper reported that U.S. officials said that U.S. is keen to formally offer recognition to Somaliland and in return Somaliland will grant a military base to US in Berbera.
The U.S. official further added that part of the discussion is Trump wants to relocate Palestinians living in Gaza to Somaliland.
The talks between Somaliland and U.S. pertaining to recognition is conducted secretly.
Once Trump was re-elected to U.S. Presidency, U.S. media reported on several occasions that the U.S. is willing to formally grant a recognition to Somaliland.
Many U.S. Congressmen from the Republican party spearhead efforts to recognize Somaliland as an independent state.
