Turkey Provides T129 helicopters to Somali Federal Gov’t

Turkish gov’t has stepped up its defense support to Somalia in terms of the fight against the militant group of Al-shabab this week after the Somali President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held a phone conversation with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyib Erdogan.

Reliable sources told the Middle East Eye that Ankara handed over three helicopters-T129 Atak to the Somali Federal Gov’t in order to speed up the war against the militant group of Al-shabab.

Ankara at the same time donated two helicopters to the Somali navy which is part of a defense pact that the two governments signed in Feb. 2024. The agreement stipulated that Ankara will support Somalia in terms of training many Somali coast guards.

Turkey trained several Somali pilots in order to fly Atak helicopters. These helicopters that have been brought to Mogadishu coincides after the pilots completed the final training levels.

Turkish President Erdogan said that his country will continue the support it provides in terms of the ongoing war with Al-shabab. He also pledged to broaden the support according to a statement issued from Turkish Presidency.
