Abaarso School, featured on 60 Minutes, in the New York Times and BBC World, is a non-profit boarding high school educating the best and the brightest Somali students in the Horn of Africa. The school prepares students to excel in higher education, while also focusing on extracurricular activities and community service. The school encourages morality and a strong sense of responsibility for improving the students’ community. While only founded in 2009, Abaarso School has achieved success not seen in the area for several decades. After four graduating classes, over 130 Abaarso students have earned full scholarships to continue their education abroad, including at Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Brown, MIT, Swarthmore, Amherst, Brandeis, and many more. The school won the 2018 International Somali Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community, and is one of a handful of schools in sub-Saharn Africa to hold accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

Abaarso is looking for individuals interested in dedicating at least one year to training these top high school students. Teachers will join the school culture that puts the growth of the school and the students first, while finding a way around the challenges inherent in working in the developing world. Between the classroom, preparation, student groups, office hours, and other projects, teachers should expect approximately 70 hours of work each week. With successful performance, significant upward mobility is possible for staff members.

The following qualifications and experiences are highly desired: prior teaching experience, altruistic work/volunteer experience, experiencing working with children, prior work or study experience in developing countries. Abaarso School is looking for teachers in various disciplines including English, computer science (computer literacy, networking, programming), math (up to Calculus), social studies, and the sciences (general science, physics, biology and chemistry).
Abaarso School teaching positions are determined through a year-round rolling application process but we are currently accepting applications for teachers in various subjects for a start date in August 2019.
