The incumbent Somaliland President, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi alias Irro on Sunday has said that Somalia does not rule Berbera, and it cannot reach an agreement with a foreign country to use the port of Berbera.
The President made the remarks in a response he made to a letter that the Somali President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has sent to the United State requesting to use the ports and airports in Berbera and Bosaso.
Irro said that the Somali Federal Gov’t is not in full control of Mogadishu.
He said: ” It is a surprise the news we heard from the Somali President. While he cannot rule Mogadishu, he is trying to enter into agreement with U.S. to use the port of Berbera. He wrote a letter to U.S. President.”
He reiterated that Somaliland is an independent country which manages its air, sea and land.
He further added that the request Somalia sent to U.S. misguides the int’l community and poses a real threat to the peace in the region.
He said: ” A democratically elected government is in power in Somaliland at moment. I inform the int’l community that Hassan Sheikh does not rule Somaliland. He governs Mogadishu and that is not enough for him.”
Leaders and Somaliland public have strongly reacted to the letter that the Somali President has submitted to U.S. President Donald Trump which was published in Semafor and Reuters.
The Somali gov’t has not spoken or has it issued a statement in response to Somaliland which rejected Somalia which appealed to U.S. to use Berbera port.
The newspapers that published the news told that Somalia wants to stop the U.S. which is said to grant a recognition to Somaliland.
The other objective behind the letter is that Somalia wants Washington must deal with Mogadishu.
