Somali President Pardons 114 inmates

114 inmates from Mogadishu prisons were released on Sunday thanks to a presidential pardon. The prisoners are said to have committed minor offenses.

The inmates were released from Mogadishu’s Central Prison and MBC prison which is located in ex-Control Afgoye.

The prisoners regained their freedom which coincided the first day of Eid-al-Fitr celebration which is marked all across Somalia.

Officials in charge of justice departments and heads of prisons told that the inmates completed part of their sentences and at the same time deserved to take advantage of the president’s pardon.

The released inmates were joyful and expressed thanks to the incumbent Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for granting them a pardon.

The release of prisoners is part of Somalia’s reconciliation efforts and to give a chance to the youth who committed the crimes to start a normal life.

The incumbent Somali President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud pardons inmates who committed minor offenses and it is a norm that the sitting president to issue a presidential pardon during Eid-al-Fitr to prisoners who committed minor offenses and have completed part of the sentences.
