The Somali President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has said that he has not yet decided that he will be a candidate in the upcoming presidential elections in 2026.
He repeated that every decision about the possibility of throwing his hat in to the ring for a third time running will be based on the security situation in Somalia and once the upcoming presidential elections come near.
He told that he is now focusing to bolster security of the country, promote economic growth, and the implementation of one-man one-vote election which has been long-awaited.
The President made the remarks in an interview he gave the Nation Media which is based in Kenya.
He said that the security situation in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu has improved ever since he assumed the office of the presidency in May, 2022.
It is remembered that Al-shabab carried out a spate of terra attacks in Mogadishu.
He said: “The security situation in Mogadishu has gotten better ever since 2022 once I took the office of the presidency. We used to witness explosion attacks every month.”
He disclosed that the improvement of security paved the way for economic growth and the building of skyscrapers in the capital Mogadishu.
He took an example for the expansion of trading centers in the capital Mogadishu.
He said: “I was elected on a program which was to wage war against Al-shabab militants and the reintroduction of democracy in Somalia. That was my election agendas. If you review the political program of the previous elections, I achieved greatly to weaken the capability of the militant group of Al-Shabab.”
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud revealed that one of his greatest goals is to bring genuine democracy back to Somalia.
He particularly reiterated the priority that he gives to the implementation of direct elections in Somalia.
