Republic of Somaliland’s Minister of Livestock and Rural Development, Omar Shuceyb, has announced that the country is working closely with Ethiopia to jointly treat and control livestock diseases. The minister emphasized that since animals frequently cross borders, disease transmission has become a shared challenge between the two countries.

“We treat the livestock together with Ethiopia and address whatever issues arise,” Minister Omar stated in an interview with state media. He added that Somaliland’s livestock exports have remained largely stable because the government has prioritized animal health.

He highlighted the ongoing cooperation with Ethiopian authorities in disease prevention and treatment to ensure the quality of exported animals.

The minister further revealed that veterinary teams from the Ministry of Livestock have launched a nationwide campaign across all regions to provide treatment and care for animals. The campaign aims to improve animal health and productivity while preventing the spread of diseases, especially in remote communities.

Minister Omar also spoke about other efforts by the Livestock Ministry to support livestock welfare. These include preparing fodder and water reserves during drought periods, such as the Aroori plains, with plans to establish similar reserves in every region after consultations with local communities.

He stressed that the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have had no impact on Somaliland’s livestock exports. The minister called on the public to increase livestock production, describing livestock as a national resource equivalent to gold and oil for Somaliland.
