Kenya’s police said that they thwarted an attack carried out by suspected Al-Shabab fighters in which they launched a coordinated attack on a base located in Fiino area in Mandera region which lies on the border with Somalia.
According to security officers, a group whose number has not been disclosed, conducted the raid on Friday evening. However, Kenya’s security forces immediately responded and pushed back the suspected Al-Shabab fighters.
A statement released by the police said that during the raid, bullets struck the student’s belly and was immediately taken to hospital where he is receiving medical attention and is recuperating.
Officials further disclosed that a security operation is ongoing in the area in order to ensure the security and that the threat has been eliminated. Witnesses said that heavy gunfire could be heard in the Fiino area at around 6 to 7 in the evening.
A similar attack was reported in the Arabia area after an hour. Another gunfire could be heard in the Asharaf area in the Mandera region.
Al-Shabab fighters reportedly intensified their attacks targeting Kenyan security forces in northeastern region, particularly in Mandera region in the past after Kenyan deployed its security forces to Somalia in 2011 in order to combat Al-Shabab fighters.
The attack coincides when Kenya has stepped up its security measures after Al-Shabab made threats against Kenyan Defense Forces operating in the border areas and inside Somalia.
