Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre arrived today in the town of Ballanbale, Galgaduud region, to participate in efforts to resolve a clan dispute stemming from past armed clashes.
The Prime Minister’s visit comes as the federal government intensifies mediation efforts between the conflicting parties; reports from the area indicate that the talks have made progress toward reaching an agreement to settle the dispute.
Hamza Abdi Barre is expected to attend the closing ceremony of the reconciliation process, where representatives from both sides are set to sign an agreement aimed at strengthening peace and mitigating the risk of future clashes between militias.
The Galgaduud region has recently experienced clan-based fighting and revenge killings, which have particularly affected the pastoralist community. These reconciliation efforts also aim to de-escalate tensions, restore the free movement of people, and alleviate the fear and anxiety felt by local residents. Meanwhile, sources close to the Prime Minister’s trip indicated that Hamza Barre will visit some of the Federal Government military bases located in the region. There, he is expected to receive briefings from military officers and meet with the troops stationed at the sites.
