The meeting that opposition politicians are in attendance which is underway in Mogadishu has entered its second day running. Former Somali President, Sheikh Shariif Sheikh Ahmed is presiding over the meeting. The meeting is focused on political issues, elections, and what the future holds for Somalia.
Ex-president Sheikh Shariif who opened the meeting said that the meeting is crucial for Somalia’s future. He told that the members of the gathering are concise, and it is the beginning of taking steps which are aimed to improve the politics in Somalia.
He spoke in particular the one-man one-vote elections. He reiterated that elections are good, but it is vital to reach an understanding which allows to consider the constitution of the country. Former Somali Prime Minister, Mohamed Hussein Roble pointed out that the meeting is intended to rescue the public, and to rectify the leadership of the government.
He confirmed that he is supportive to one-man one-vote, but it is vital to follow a way which is in line with the laws of the country. The attendees are expected to issue a communique in which the opposition will address issues pertaining to politics, security and elections.
It is expected that they will elect the leader of the opposition. The former Somali Prime Ministers, Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, Hassan Ali Khaire, Abdi Farah Shirdon, former parliament speakers, Shariif Hassan Sheikh Adan, Mohamed Mursal, MP’s, and former ministers are in attendance.
The meeting is part of the opposition efforts in which they want to put forward suggestions that will resolve the current political stalemate in the country. It is expected that the meeting will be underway in the days to come, and will lead to tangible political change.
