MP Mohamed Abiib of the Somaliland House of Representatives welcomed the statement by U.S. President Donald Trump distinguishing between Somaliland and Somalia, describing it as a politically significant move that demonstrates the impossibility of ignoring Somaliland’s existence, as well as the peace and progress it has achieved.
The MP stated that Trump’s remarks hold political importance for Somaliland, noting that the efforts, patience, and resilience of the Somaliland people have not been in vain. He urged the public to strengthen their unity, uphold their aspirations, and continue their pursuit of international recognition.
Mohamed Abiib said: “I was greatly impressed by the statement from U.S. President Donald Trump distinguishing between Somaliland and Somalia. This is a major, significant victory and undeniable proof that Somaliland’s existence—and the reality on the ground regarding our peace, democracy, and social development—cannot be ignored.” He added that any statement from the U.S. leader carries significant political weight, noting: “It is no small matter for the leader of the world’s most powerful nation to clearly distinguish between Somaliland and Somalia; his remarks represent a move of great political significance and meaning.”
The MP addressed the people of Somaliland, encouraging them to remain steadfast in their aspirations and confident in their ongoing efforts to secure recognition.
“To the people of Somaliland, I say: our hard work and patience will not go to waste. We will soon reap the rewards of our endurance and perseverance. Therefore, we must strengthen our unity, uphold our hope, and continue on the path toward realizing our goal of recognition,” said Mohamed Abiib.
