The Kulmiye Party has welcomed a statement made yesterday, October 13, 2026, by U.S. President Donald Trump, in which he described Somaliland and Somalia as two entirely distinct countries and called for formal steps toward recognizing Somaliland.
A press release issued by the party on October 14, 2026—signed by Kulmiye Party Chairman and presidential candidate Mohamed Kahin Ahmed—stated that the party welcomes Trump’s remarks and urges him to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent nation with full sovereignty.
In its statement, Kulmiye highlighted the diplomatic relationship between Somaliland and the United States, noting the efforts to secure recognition undertaken by the party’s previous administrations—specifically the governments led by former presidents Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud (Silanyo) and Muse Bihi Abdi.
The party further noted that those administrations worked to strengthen ties between the U.S. and Somaliland and pursued initiatives to advance Somaliland’s international relations and quest for recognition. The press release also highlighted the support Somaliland receives from members of the U.S. House of Representatives and legislative initiatives aimed at strengthening bilateral relations. Kulmiye stated that efforts undertaken in 2022 and 2023 were part of these diplomatic activities.
The party’s chairman, Mohamed Kahin Ahmed, affirmed Kulmiye’s commitment to safeguarding Somaliland’s sovereignty and supporting efforts to secure international recognition. He also called upon other nations and world leaders to consider the aspirations of the people of Somaliland for official recognition.
Finally, Kulmiye noted the efforts made by the people of Somaliland regarding peace, democracy, stability, and self-governance, urging the international community to pay special attention to Somaliland’s goal of achieving international recognition.
