The Government of the Republic of Somaliland has officially signed the construction agreement for the long-awaited Lawya-Addo–Borama road project, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and stimulating economic growth across Somaliland, Ethiopia, and Djibouti.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Director of the Somaliland Roads Development Agency (RDA), Mohamed Farah Abdi, described the project as one of the most significant achievements undertaken during the current administration’s tenure.

“It is a great joy for the nation that today we are signing the largest project implemented by the Unity and Progress government,” he stated.

The Director highlighted the strategic importance of the Lawya-Addo–Borama corridor, emphasizing that the road will serve as a vital transportation link for Somaliland, Ethiopia, and Djibouti. He noted that the project is expected to create major economic opportunities for communities living along the route through increased trade, mobility, and investment.

The Somaliland Roads Development Agency (RDA), with financial support from the African Development Bank (AfDB), announced that the first phase of the project will cover a 30-kilometer stretch connecting Lawya-Addo to the district of Saylac.

Construction work on the road will be carried out jointly by Tianjin Tainer Construction Engineering Co., Ltd and ADCON Somaliland.

For many years, the Lawya-Addo–Borama road has been regarded as a critical infrastructure project eagerly anticipated by both the public and the nation. Its implementation is expected to significantly improve transportation networks, strengthen regional trade corridors, and accelerate socio-economic development in the western regions of the Republic of Somaliland.

The project is also viewed as a key step toward enhancing cross-border trade and regional integration in the Horn of Africa, positioning Somaliland as an increasingly important gateway for commerce and connectivity in the region.
