The Ethiopian government has announced the closure of its embassy in Asmara, Eritrea, citing direct and indirect actions taken by Eritrea against Ethiopia as the reason for this move.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that ten Eritrean diplomats based in Addis Ababa have been ordered to leave the country, accused of involvement in activities that Ethiopia describes as posing a direct threat to its national security.
The Ethiopian government ordered the diplomats to depart within 48 hours, stating that their activities violated the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The Ministry also called on the Eritrean government to cease all actions that contravene the principles governing relations between sovereign states.
However, the statement noted that Ethiopia continues to value the historical, cultural, and people-to-people ties between the two nations, emphasizing its commitment to peaceful coexistence, regional stability, and integration within the Horn of Africa. The Ethiopian government has stated its commitment to resolving disputes peacefully and to working with countries in the Horn of Africa to achieve lasting peace, security, and regional integration. Ethiopia recently accused Eritrea of โโsupporting opposition rebel groups.
