Somalilandโ€™s Minister of Livestock and Rural Development, Dr. Omar Shuaib Mohamed, briefed the Council of Ministers on the significant increase in livestock exports and the importance of establishing a comprehensive national plan to develop the livestock sector.

The Minister informed the Council of the need for a comprehensive national plan to improve livestock husbandry, health, production, and care, ensuring alignment with the sector’s growing needs and market demands.

Dr. Omar Shuaib noted that the Ministry has significantly expanded veterinary treatment and vaccination servicesโ€”particularly targeting prevalent diseasesโ€”as part of efforts to safeguard livestock health and ensure the quality of animals destined for export.

He highlighted that the livestock trade is the backbone of Somalilandโ€™s economy, directly impacting the livelihoods of a large segment of the population. Consequently, he emphasized the need to approach livestock rearing differently than in the past, adopting modern planning and systems. The Minister also underscored the importance of Somaliland strategically preparing for the growing competition in livestock markets and exports, in order to enhance the quality and competitiveness of the country’s livestock.

Finally, Dr. Omar Shuaib strongly advocated for the urgent construction and equipping of a dedicated livestock export terminal in Berbera, stating that it could boost the quality, efficiency, and competitiveness of Somaliland’s livestock exports.
