Armed militia on Thursday attacked on Galkayo Central Prison where inmates convicted with major offenses are in detention.
Reports say that the objective of the armed militia was to forcibly free inmates in the prison, and fighting ensued between the security forces and the armed assailants.
Reports further indicate that the fire has ceased but it is not confirmed if the armed assailants succeeded to forcibly release the inmates from the prison.
There are no confirmed reports on the number of casualties in the aftermath of the clashes. Armed assailants attacked Galkayo central prison on several occasions.
It is believed that Puntland Armed Forces Court sentenced to death the inmates that are in detention in the prison. The inmates are held in detention in the prison for crimes including drugs and retaliatory killings.
It was four months when armed assailants raided the prison and attempted to free an inmate which resulted the death of one person and two others were wounded.
