On Tuesday, a Jubaland police officer was detained for the intentional murder of well-known journalist Mr. Abshir Khalif Shide Omar, as confirmed by Jubaland media. The incident occurred on Monday in Kismayo after a brief altercation between the journalist and the police officer. The motive behind the police officer’s actions remains unknown, but investigations are currently underway to determine the cause. Jubaland police spokesman Captain Shukri Farah Du’ale stated that the detained officer will be taken to court to ensure justice is served. The victim, Abshir, was employed by Jubaland television, Radio Wamo, and was a cameraman for Hornconnect Company’s Kismayo branch. The Jubaland Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism has expressed sincere condolences to the family, relatives, and fellow journalists for the loss of Abshir. The Jubaland police have been commended for their swift response in apprehending the suspect. This tragic incident marks the first journalist death in Somalia this year, highlighting concerns for the safety of journalists and freedom of the press. The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) has called for an immediate investigation into the case to ensure justice is served and public confidence is restored.
