30 MP’s from Somaliland House of Representatives on Saturday tabled a motion demanding that the stalled dialogue between Somaliland and Somalia to be suspended.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yasiin Haji Mohamud Hiir alias Faraton has read the names of MP’s who have tabled the motion in front of the house. He accepted the motion and submitted to the adviser of the House of Representatives.
Somaliland gov’t recently suspended the talks between the Somali Federal Gov’t and Somaliland but that move has not been legally passed the motion which means that the talks are suspended.
If the House of Representatives pass the motion, it will be illegal for Somaliland gov’t to engage dialogue with the Somali Federal Gov’t.
The decision of Somaliland in which it stopped the ongoing talks with Somalia came once Somaliland was furious after the Somali Prime Minister, Hamze Abdi Barre visited Lasanod, Sool’s provincial capital on 12th of April, 2025.
He announced while in Lasanod that the Somali Federal Gov’t has recognized SSC-Khaatumo as Federal Member State.
The Dialogue between Somaliland and Somalia was first held in London in Feb. 2012 after the Somaliland parliament allowed that Hargeisa and Mogadishu hold talks. It was the first talks since 1991 once Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia.
Silanyo administration seemed thought the dialogue between the two sides will bring Mogadishu and Hargeisa closer. The talks which continued for 13 years did not produce tangible outcome. The suspension of the talks between Somalia and Somaliland means that the two sides have strained relations.
