Workshop on Best Practices on Somaliland Mining and Mineral Policy – Opened on Wednesday in the MoEM Hall.

Mining is important to the economies of Somaliland. Recently, country revised their Mining and Mineral Policies to ensure future economic benefit.
Mohamed Yusuf, General Director of Ministry of Energy and Minerals officially opened the five-day Workshop, which is aimed at drafting a Somaliland Mining and Mineral Policy, which he said “The Somaliland Mining and Mineral Policy recognized the need for encouraging private investment including Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and for attracting state-of-art technology in the mineral sector”.
The mineral sector plays an important role in
resource-rich developing countries and is
considered to be the engine for broader
economic growth (MEPC, 2001).
Attended by about 20+ participants, the workshop is expected to recommend measures the government should take in the establishment of a new Mining and Mineral policy. The participants include MoEM Mineral Department staffs, MoEM Legal Affairs Section and other MoEM departments.
Mining is the second major source of income for the Somaliland Government, after Livestock.
