Somaliland Rejects Somalia’s Claims Over Berbera Port Agreements with UAE

The Government of the Republic of Somaliland has issued a strong statement rejecting what it described as false claims by Somalia regarding authority over the port of Berbera and related international agreements.

In an official release, Somaliland’s government emphasized that Berbera forms an integral part of its sovereign territory. It stated that Somalia holds no legal, administrative, or practical control over the port or the nation.

The statement specifically addressed a recent press release from Somalia’s government, which reportedly sought to annul or influence agreements involving Berbera. Somaliland asserted that Somalia is not a party to any deals signed by Somaliland, nor does it serve as a guarantor or sponsor for such agreements—past, present, or future. Any Somalia attempt to suspend, alter, or impact these pacts was declared legally void and inconsistent with international law principles.

The government reaffirmed the validity of all agreements between Somaliland and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), describing them as fully legal, active, and enforceable. These partnerships, it noted, were entered into by Somaliland’s authorized constitutional bodies to advance economic development, trade, infrastructure, and regional stability.

Somaliland expressed appreciation to the UAE government and its leadership, particularly His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, for their enduring partnership and contributions to peace, stability, and economic progress in Somaliland and the broader Horn of Africa.

The statement concluded by underscoring Somaliland’s commitment to reliable international cooperation grounded in mutual respect, non-interference, and adherence to international law.

This development follows Somalia’s recent announcement annulling various bilateral agreements with the UAE, including those related to ports such as Berbera. Somaliland maintains that such Somalia actions have no bearing on its independent governance or established deals.
