Somaliland: Election Commission debunks rumors of resignation

The National Electoral Commission has not submitted a resignation letter to the incumbent Somaliland president, Musa Bihi Abdi as confirmed by reliable sources close to the commission.

NEC members were busy last week meeting with members of donor countries that assist Somaliland’s democracy and setting a timetable for the upcoming parliamentary election in Somaliland which is about to transpire at the end of 2019.

Source close to the Electoral Commission said that the news which is spread like wildfire is baseless and there was scheduled meeting between the Head of State and NEC members where they tendered the resignation letter. The source further said that NEC members are preoccupied with the overriding election which is getting near.

Politicians who have particular vested interest circulated the speculations in the public the source further cited.

The parliamentary election was due to be held in March, 2019 but was delayed due to standoff among the political parties.

Wadani opposition party stopped working relations with National Election Commission which they accuse of being responsible widespread irregularities in the last presidential polls.
