Somali FM, AU envoy discuss ways to boost security cooperation

The outgoing foreign affairs minister of Somalia, Ahmed Ma’alin Fiqi on Monday held a meeting with newly appointed Interim Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for Somalia, Rahmon Adebayo, while efforts are underway to fight against the militant group of AL-Shabab.

The meeting which was held in Mogadishu, focused on the consolidation of the cooperation in security, strengthening the military cooperation on the fight against Al-Shabab militants, and enhancing the coordination of the tasks of the Somali Federal Gov’t and African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

Minister Fiqi said: “The fight against extremist groups need a unified support be it regional or int’l level. The working cooperation with the African Union is agreat pillar to find a lasting peace in Somalia.”

The meeting came at a time when the Somali security forces intensified operations against the militant group of Al-Shabab that are underway in South and Central provinces particularly in Middle Shabelle and Galmudug.

The Somali forces are supported by friends in the world seized many strategic areas that were under the control of the militant group of Al-Shabab.

Rahmon Adebayo once again confirmed that the African Union stands by Somalia.

He pledged to provide political and security support while efforts underway to reform the security agencies in the country.

AUSSOM replaced ATMIS is planning that the Somali security forces will take over the responsibility of the security from foreign troops.

However, there are worries over the quality and power of the Somali forces which led to expedite discussion on int’l support, trainings and getting financial support.
