The Puntland administration has launched two simultaneous operations—one on land and one at sea—across various parts of the region.
The first operation, codenamed “Onkad” (Thunder), is underway in the Cal Madow Mountains of the Sanaag region; the Puntland administration states that this operation aims to counter Al-Shabaab militants who have reportedly established bases in the area.
Reports indicate that the Puntland administration is deploying thousands of military troops to the Cal Madow Mountains, preparing them for an operation intended to target Al-Shabaab bases located there.
Information emerging from the Puntland administration also alleges that Al-Shabaab has established links with the Houthis in Yemen and that members of the group have undergone training within the Cal Madow mountain areas. This claim originates from the Puntland administration, and there is no independent confirmation regarding the matter.
Meanwhile, the Puntland administration has deployed naval forces—utilizing warships—to operate along the coast; this maritime operation aims to combat piracy and armed groups that have been increasingly active along Puntland’s shores.
Consequently, these two operations are proceeding simultaneously on land and at sea, as the Puntland administration seeks to strengthen security across both its territory and coastal waters.
