The Somali Federal Gov’t is keeping a watchful eye on the security of Afgoye district in Lower Shabelle province. The Somali Gov’t is currently imposing measures which are aimed at ensuring the peace and stability of areas surrounding Afgoye town. Afgoye is important for the security of the capital Mogadishu.

Reports emerged that heavily armed mobile fighters of the militant group of Al-Shabab reinforced their presence in areas surrounding Afgoye town. Al-Shabab’s objective was to create security chaos in these districts. The incumbent Somali Prime Minister, Hamze Abdi Barre on Sunday travelled to Lower Shabelle region in order to throw his support behind the men and women in uniform who are engaged a war with the extremist group of Al-Shabab.

The Prime Minister went there in order to keep heavily armed mobile fighters of the militant group of Al-shabab at bay when it comes to Afgoye and other surrounding areas. The mission was to reduce the pressure put on these districts. The media understand that the Somali Federal Gov’t is mobilizing troops in these districts in order the Somali troops ensure the security of Afgoye and other areas.

The Somali gov’t deployed troops in these areas last year. It is also mobilizing new troops within Afgoye and other areas that maintain the security and reinforce troops stationed in these areas. Reports further indicate officers of the Somali National Army, traditional elders and intellectuals hailing from Afgoye are currently cooperating to establish local forces that will extend a helping hand in order to ensure the security of Afgoye.

The other objective behind the establishment of local forces is to fight with mobile Al-shabab fighters who come to the outskirts of Afgoye town. Al-Shabab is currently feeling a mounting pressure when it comes the airstrikes and operations against the militant group which occurred in Middle Shabelle region. Al-Shabab’s plan is start fighting in Lower Shabelle region . The Somali Gov’t recently deployed units of Somali troops in farms that lie in the banks of the river. Afgoye is a town that lies 30 km South of the capital Mogadishu. It is a town which the Somali troops protect and ensure the security of the capital Mogadishu.
