The Somali National Army, in collaboration with international partners, carried out a planned operation in the Ugunji area of Lower Shabelle region yesterday. The operation targeted members of Al-Shabab who were regrouping to launch attacks against government troops. According to a statement released by the Somali defense ministry, the operation was conducted based on intelligence reports of Al-Shabab movements in Ugunji. The ministry reported that six Al-Shabab members were successfully eliminated and weapons and military equipment belonging to the group were destroyed. However, the Somali government did not provide any further details on the casualties of the raid. The Somali army, with the support of international allies, has recently increased operations against Al-Shabab in the South and Central regions of Somalia. The government has also pledged to continue exerting military pressure on the group. The defense ministry announced that the armed forces will intensify operations against Al-Shabab and called on the public to cooperate with security agencies in order to eradicate the group.
