BOSASO--One Somali pirate was killed and several others were injured when they met strong resistance from a fishing vessel flagged by Iran in the waters off the coast of Eyl district. The group of Somali pirates attempted to hijack the fishing vessel, which they planned to use for piracy attacks against ships in the Somali waters. Similar incidents have occurred in the past along the coasts of Puntland. The Iranian vessel had armed men on board, suspected to be Somali nationals, who strongly resisted the attack. Reports indicate that there were ten pirates involved in the exchange of fire, resulting in one death and multiple injuries. The body of the deceased pirate and two injured pirates were taken to Eyl district. Puntland security forces impounded the pirate vessel, which had drifted to the coast, and detained two injured pirates and the captain. This incident occurred while a Chinese vessel, known as Lioa Dong Yu 578, was hijacked on December 31, 2025 in the Bandar Beyla coasts of Bari region. Piracy incidents are on the rise along the coasts of Puntland, raising security concerns for ships traveling in Somali waters.
