The Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) has strongly condemned the illegal detention of journalist Abdikariim Isse Liban, also known as Isdeji, who is the representative of Bulsho Television in Sheikh District. Isdeji was arrested after airing a complaint from locals in the Huddisa area against the authorities, specifically the Mayor of Sheikh District. SOLJA has received information that the detention is a result of pressure to prevent the journalist from carrying out his responsibilities. This detention is a clear violation of the freedom of speech and independence of the press, which are guaranteed by the Somaliland constitution. Journalists have the right to report on issues that affect the public without facing threats, arrests, or suppression. SOLJA is deeply concerned that Isdeji has been taken to Berbera, the provincial capital of Sahil, which could lead to further violations and abuse against journalists. We call on the authorities in Sheikh District and security agencies to release Isdeji immediately and without any conditions. We also urge them to stop the crackdown and suppression of the free press. The Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) also calls on the Somaliland government and all involved parties to respect the freedom of the press and ensure the safety and well-being of journalists who are carrying out their duties.
