Somaliland Gov’t bans carrying weapons in Erigavo

Somaliland’s State minister for the ministry of interior and security, Abdirashid Mohamed Ahmed alias Magalo, flanked by the committee responsible for peace in Sanaag region, on Thursday announced in a press conference held in Erigavo that the nationalization of units of local tribal militias has come to an end. They also issued strict measures which are aimed at tightening the overall security in Sanaag province. They have banned carrying an authorized weapons in the town. They have reiterated that those carrying weapons within Ergavo town and the entire Sanaag province will face the consequences by not abiding the new directive.

He said: ” We notify local residents in Erigavo that the nationalization of local clan militia has come to an end. From now on it is prohibited to carry all kinds of weapons in Erigavo. We inform the regional authority, the police force to confiscate those who are seen carrying weapons and have not complied with the new directive.”

The state minister pointed out that it is also banned from military personnel to carry weapons within the town. He informed the military personnel to leave their guns in their barracks. He further disclosed that the Police Force are the only ones who are authorized to carry guns in Erigavo. Sanaag regional governor told that the decision has been reached following a meeting held by the committee responsible for peace in Sanaag province. He promised that the neasures will be enforced by the police.
