At least one person has been confirmed dead while three others were wounded in an unrest that transpired at Borama Central Prison on Saturday. The riots occurred after the prison guards and inmates clashed within the prison. Reports say that the inmates were enraged and started beating the prison guards with their hands. Reports further indicate that gunshots could be heard within the prison.
It is reported that the prison guards fired live bullets in order to get the situation under control. The wounded inmates were immediately taken to Borama hospital which is coping with their treatment. The relatives of the inmates who were wounded in the clashes gathered outside the main gate of the hospital.
Military soldiers were deployed who took over the security of the hospital. The security forces sealed off the main gate of the hospital. Awdal Regional Governor, Muhumed Hassan Jama alias Hoday who held a press conference in Borama briefed the media on the incident. He told that the riots broke out in the prison after inmates clashed with the security forces. He said that the unrest resulted the death of one person named Yonis Ahmed Dahir. Three others were wounded named Hamse Mustafe Omar, Abdikadir Adan and Hassan Hussein Qalinle who were the inmates at the prison.
Speaking on behalf of Somaliland gov’t, he said that it is decided that the compensation and the burial money of the deceased inmate will be paid by the gov’t. He disclosed that this was an agreement reached between the family, the relatives and the elders from the deceased inmate. He said: “The injured inmates are currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital. The gov’t has taken full responsibility of paying all the money that those who were wounded will be treated.”
Sultan Ahmed Elmi Kabaal who is the Sultan of the deceased inmate said that he did not die deliberately. He told that an agreement has been reached. He said: “We have agreed to settle the issue. The incident was a predestination. It was not a murder committed deliberately.” He revealed that Awdal regional authority and the Commander of Custodial Corps General Ahmed Awale Yusuf alias Libaah reached a settlement over the death of the inmate.
