Somalia’s Ambassador to the United Nations Security Council, Ambassador Abukar Baalle, stated that the terrorist threat is constantly evolving, noting that these groups are rapidly exploiting new technologies.
Ambassador Baalle noted that terrorist groups use social media to recruit and attract new members, while utilizing encrypted communication platforms to plan operations and attacks.
He also highlighted the use of artificial intelligence and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) by terrorist groups, noting that these technologies enable the execution of attacks that would have been unimaginable a decade ago.
Ambassador Baalle stated that Somalia has significantly diminished the threat posed by Al-Shabaab and ISIS, highlighting the progress made in the fight against these groups.
The Ambassador acknowledged the sacrifices made by the Somali National Army, noting the pivotal role they have played in the war against terrorism over the past twenty years.
He emphasized the immense effort Somali forces have dedicated to the fight against terrorism and the armed groups operating within the country. He stated that although the fight against terrorism has not yet ended, it is crucial for Somalia to take ownership and leadership of efforts to ensure the country’s security and stability.
Finally, he noted that national ownership of the conflict and peace efforts forms the foundation for achieving lasting peace, as Somalia continues its efforts against terrorist groups.
