The Somali Federal Gov’t took important steps which demonstrated a huge change in terms of country’s foreign policy while strengthening the diplomatic ties with the Russian Gov’t.
This clearly indicates that Somalia is distancing itself from the int’l partners.
The Current Speaker of Somalia’s Upper House of Parliament, Hon. Abdi Hashi Abdilahi paid an official working visit to Moscow which clearly demonstrates the reform that the Somali Federal Gov’t is making in terms of its foreign policy.
Hon. Abdi Hashi held high level meeting with Chairman of the State Duma of Russian Federation, Vyacheslav Volodin.
The two sides discussed strengthening the bilateral cooperation in the areas of security, economy and political affairs.
On the other hand, The Somali Federal Gov’t demanded the dissolution of C6+ which is a forum that brought together U.S., UK, EU, UN, AU, Ethiopia, Kenya and Sweden.
The Somali Federal Gov’t disclosed that the existence of C6+ portrays that Somalia is still in the hands of foreign entities which is not in line with the political independence of Somalia.
The new step that the Somali Federal Gov’t took which is to deepen the diplomatic ties with Russia and distancing itself from the int’l partners shows that Somalia is seeking a foreign policy built on a new relationship based on respect, equality and direct mutuality.
Although it has not been disclosed of agreements that Somalia entered into Russia, it seems that the visit and the meeting demonstrate that Moscow will be a new ally that Somalia is going to bank on in the years to come.
