The Somali National Army (SNA), backed by local forces who were mobilized on Monday, have gained control of most parts of Baidoa after intense clashes erupted at the east checkpoint. The Somali government troops faced strong resistance from South West State Dervish Forces, who had defense positions in the Burijeed settlement – one of the outposts securing the security of Baidoa. Reports indicate that the SNA bombarded areas where the Dervish Forces had set up defense lines, leading to fighting spreading to parts of the livestock market, Cadaada, and Berdaale villages. SNA vehicles, along with combat vehicles owned by Turkish-trained soldiers known as Gorgor, have entered the town and were welcomed by residents in the heart of Baidoa. The Somali government troops now have control of most of the Baidoa villages, including the Military Command of the 60th Division of the SNA and the main police station. However, reports also indicate that the fighting resulted in heavy casualties, including deaths and injuries. At least 50 injuries have been taken to hospitals in Baidoa, with most being treated at the regional hospital in Bay of Baidoa. It is important to note that the Somali government troops have not yet seized the presidential palace or Shaati Gaduud airport. The troops are accompanied by officials from South West State, who hold positions in the Somali Federal government and have come to Baidoa to take over the presidential palace, which is the residence of ousted South West State leader, Mr. Abdiasis Hassan Mohamed, also known as Lafatagaren.
