Armed clan militia fighters, supported by the Somali Federal Government and in collaboration with the Somali National Army (SNA), encountered clashes with the militant group Al-Shabab today and yesterday. The clashes occurred as the troops were moving between Buurhakaba and Daynuunaay, with Al-Shabab ambushing the Somali troops and clan fighters. According to regional officers, Al-Shabab launched direct attacks and used explosives against the clan militia and SNA. The Information Minister of South West State, Mr. Mohamed Ibrahim Bilaal, confirmed that the state’s security forces are currently stationed in their defense lines on the outskirts of Biadoa. He also stated that there were no armed clashes in the area. A spokesperson for the allied forces, Mr. Mohamed Hussein (known as John), confirmed that Al-Shabab fighters launched an assault against the allied troops, resulting in a fight between the two sides. He also stated that airstrikes were carried out by drones, which helped target the Al-Shabab fighters. Sources have revealed that Turkish-owned drones are supporting the clan fighters and Somali government troops in air assaults. It appears that Turkey is assisting the clan fighters, who strongly oppose the leadership of South West State President, Mr. Abdiasis Laftagaren. The Turkish government and its embassy in Mogadishu have not issued a statement denying or accepting their involvement in the fighting in Bay region. A statement released by the Somali Ministry of Defense on Sunday reported that the Somali National Army (SNA) successfully defeated Al-Shabab fighters in armed clashes near Daynuunaay in Bay region. The statement confirmed that 21 Al-Shabab fighters were eliminated and more than 10 were injured. The Somali troops have taken control of Daynuunay, a key location that links the vital road between Baidia and Mogadishu.
