The Somali Federal Government has accused the President of South West State, Mr. Abdiasis Laftagaren, and the Speaker of the Parliament, Mr. Ali Saed Fiqi, of indirectly supporting or encouraging the militant group Al-Shabab. However, the ministry of information of Somalia has not provided substantial evidence to support these allegations. In a statement released by the information ministry, it was stated that the government is aware of the direct links between the ex-leader of South West State, Mr. Abdiaisis Mohamed Hassan (known as Laftagaren) and Parliamentary Speaker, Mr. Ali Saed Fiqi, with Al-Shabab. The statement also claimed that these individuals have disseminated false information about international partners supporting the Somali National Army (SNA) in counterterrorism operations, while defending Al-Shabab fighters who were recently defeated in battle. The Somali Federal Government has strongly condemned and refuted the actions and statements of these individuals, vowing to hold accountable anyone involved in supporting terrorism. In contrast, the government announced a successful operation carried out by the Somali National Army (SNA) in the Bay region, targeting members of Al-Shabab. According to a press statement from the ministry of information, the operation took place on March 29, 2026, resulting in the death of 20 Al-Shabab fighters, including important senior leaders. The statement also revealed that bases and equipment belonging to Al-Shabab were dismantled during the operation. The government emphasized that this operation is part of ongoing efforts to eliminate terrorist groups and ensure overall security in the country. The Somali Federal Government is calling on the Somali people to cooperate with security agencies and refrain from providing any support to terrorist groups. The government has pledged to intensify the fight against Al-Shabab and ensure the safety of its citizens.
