Somali Security Forces on Saturday repelled an attach that the militant group of Al-Shabab launched to an military base in Awdheegle district which is located in Lower SHabelle region. Initial reports indicate that Al-Shabab used a car bomb to detonate the base manned by Somali National Army (SNA. The two sides engaged in a fierce fighting.
Local sources said that there were heavy casualties but did not confirm the exact death toll. A press statement released by the Somali gov’t said that the brave Somali troops foiled Al-Shabab raid on military base. The statement went on to say that the vigilant Somali army inflicted heavy casualties on Al-Shabab. It is reported that Al-Shabab fighters fled from the area once they were overpowered. Somali security forces stationed in Awdheegle launched an operation in order to tighten security in the wake of Al-Shabab attack. Reports further indicate that tension is running high as far as the clashes are concerned.
