The Puntland Armed Forces Court has sentenced Barkhad Farah Yasin Yusuf to two years in military prison after he was accused of selling ten goats to the group ISIS.
The court stated that Barkhad sold the livestock to four members of ISIS—who, according to the court, had their faces covered—for a total of $700.
According to the court’s ruling, the defendant claimed he was coerced into selling the livestock to the group’s members; investigations revealed that he had no prior connection to ISIS and had not previously sold livestock to them.
The court stated that it took into account the evidence in the case file, the arguments of the defense lawyers, and the statement the defendant made before the judge.
Barkhad Farah Yasin Yusuf was sentenced to two years in military prison, with the term commencing on February 2, 2025—the day of his arrest, according to court records.
The court stated that the verdict was based on provisions of Puntland’s Counter-Terrorism Law and the Somali Penal Code. The court’s decision is subject to appeal within 30 days.
