Puntland government has provided further details regarding an operation against Al-Shabaab in the Golis mountain range of the Al-Madow highlands, specifically targeting a facility in the Markad area used by the group to stockpile weapons and ammunition.
A press release from the Puntland Presidency stated that the successful operation was the result of coordination between Puntland officials and the United States government. It targeted a site Al-Shabaab utilized to store arms and ammunition intended to fuel terrorist activities and threaten the safety of the people of Puntland and Somalia.
Puntland stated that this operation is part of an expanding campaign to weaken and eliminate Al-Shabaab’s capabilities in northern Somalia. By targeting infrastructure that supports terrorist networks, Puntland and the United States are intensifying pressure on the group.
“The Puntland government and the United States government have reaffirmed that this operation is part of an ongoing effort to weaken Al-Shabaab’s capabilities, deny terrorist groups safe havens, and foster lasting peace and stability in northern Somalia,” the press release stated.
