The Somali President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday held a high-level meeting with EU ambassadors based in Mogadishu.
He discussed with EU envoys on the strategic cooperation between Somalia and the European Union, a statement from Villa Somalia said.
He expressed thanks and appreciations the crucial role that EU played when it comes to the rebuilding of gov’t institutions, the support of the federal system and the people of Somalia.
The statement went on to say that the President pointed out gov’t plans on the reconciliation, strengthening good-governance, and the progress on democracy which is based on one-man one-vote elections.
The statement further added that the President put forward the preparations of the National Consultative Meeting, and the steps to ensure the political stability in the country.
The President reiterated that the Federal gov’t is committed to consolidate the int’l cooperation in order to ensure brighter future, unity and progress for Somali people.
The meeting follows previous gatherings held in Nairobi between some of the politicians and foreign diplomats based in the country.
The focus of the meeting was that the political rivals must find a lasting resolution the type of elections that will be held in the country in the upcoming year.
The Somali President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud clearly wants that the coming elections will be based on one-man one-vote while the opposition groups want to return to indirect elections, citing security concerns in the country.
Opposition groups are aligned with Puntland and Jubaland that are demanding to return to indirect elections that previous presidents and parliaments were elected.
The President was accompanied by members of the cabinet ministers of the Somali Federal Gov’t.
