Al-Shabab militants attack military base manned by Somali troops

Suspected al-shabab fighters on Wednesday attacked a military base housing gov’t troops and Ma’awisley local forces based in Adan Yabaal district in Middle Shabelle province.

The attack began with suicide car bombs followed by a heavy gunfire that ensued between government forces and Al-Shabab fighters.

Reports say that Al-shabab fighters attacked the military base in multiple directions.

There are casualties including deaths and injuries but the exact number of casualties are not yet confirmed.

The fighting between gov’t troops and Al-shabab fighters is underway in the district.

The fighting spread to other parts of the Adan Yabaal district.

It is reported that Al-Shabab fighters are trying to overrun the military base so as to take control of Adan Yabaal district.

Reports further indicate that Al-Shabab fighters who launched the attack met strong resistance from the gov’t troops.

The Somali gov’t has not so far issued a statement regarding Al-Shabab’s attack on the military base manned by gov’t forces.

Tension is running high and reports say that there is a troop movement and the two sides are getting reinforcements.

Somali troops liberated Adan Yabaal district from Al-shabab militants as it was the group’s stronghold in Middle Shabelle province.
