U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) stated that, in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, it conducted airstrikes against Al-Shabaab militants in areas of the Lower Juba region.
AFRICOM reported that the strikes were carried out in the vicinity of Welmaroโlocated approximately 40 km west of Jilibโand near Ali Farah, situated about 90 km northeast of Jilib.
The U.S. command stated that the strikes achieved their intended objectives and resulted in casualties, though it did not disclose the number of individuals targeted or provide specific details regarding the losses.
AFRICOM noted that the operation is part of joint efforts by the United States, the Federal Government of Somalia, and the Somali National Army aimed at degrading the capabilities of Al-Shabaab militants.
These airstrikes coincide with ongoing operations by government forces and their allies against Al-Shabaab militants in parts of southern Somalia.
