Opposition politicians who are staunchly against the Somali Gov’t led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud are due to attend a meeting that is scheduled to open in Mogadishu today.
They will discuss the current situation in the country, election, security and the amendment of the transitional constitution. Election will be an issue that will be high in the agenda of the meeting. Election is the bone of contention between the opposition groups and the Somali Federal Gov’t.
The opposition leaders who have gathered in Mogadishu want to unite their position in which they staunchly oppose the way the incumbent Somali President will administer the upcoming elections.
The opposition politicians want that the 2026 elections will be an inclusive, and free and fair. They are not satisfied with the way the elections are going to be administered. The opposition groups opposed the plan of Villa Somalia in which they want the public to elect their leader through one-man one-vote.
The opposition politicians have repeated that it is not possible to hold one-man one-vote in the country due to security and political constraints. They called on to return to indirect elections.
The meeting which is scheduled to officially open in Mogadishu on Wednesday. It is expected that they will issue a communique in regard to the election process in Somalia. The opposition warned the current President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to hold elections that are broad based in the country.
The Somali Federal Gov’t was keeping an eye on the meetings that the opposition groups were holding in Mogadishu and will closely monitor the meeting that will open today in the capital.
The meeting is crucial and is expected to be an obstacle to the Somali Gov’t plan which is to hold one-man one-vote in the country. Villa Somalia is feeling a lot of pressure from the int’l community and it is pressurizing the gov’t to hold an inclusive election in the country.
The meeting is expected to be attended by former Prime Ministers, former Speakers of the parliament, the former Somali President Sheikh Shariif Sheikh Ahmed, MP’s from the bicameral parliament, politicians and civil society organizations.
