UN Special Envoy to Somalia and Somaliland, 𝐌𝐫. 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐰𝐚𝐧 arrived in Hargeisa on an official working visit, and held high level talks with President H.E Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi alias Irro at the presidency. The president was accompanied by members of the cabinet during the high level discussions between SL President and 𝐌𝐫. 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐰𝐚𝐧. 𝐌𝐫. 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐰𝐚𝐧, UN Special envoy praised the incumbent president on the victory of the last presidential polls that was held in the country on the 13th of November, 2024.
He also lauded the peaceful transfer of power that took place in the country. Mr. James underscored UN readiness and its commitment to implement the projects in Somaliland. He was also briefed on first 100 days of Abdirahman Irro’s presidency. He welcomed the steps taken by Somaliland president H.E Abdirahman Irro which calls for ending disputes in certain regions in Somaliland by peaceful manner. 𝐌𝐫. 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐰𝐚𝐧 lauded the bold step that Somaliland President took to create Somaliland Peace Council (SPC). On his part, the President acknowledged the humanitarian projects that UN is currently carrying out in Somaliland. He emphasized that one of his top priorities of his administration is to achieve lasting peace and implement tangible reforms in number of areas. Irro called for the rebels based in Lasanod to come to negotiation table from day one. He further noted that relentless attacks were carried out by the rebels based in Lasanod.
SL President further said that the reason behind the creation of Somaliland Peace Council is to declare unconditional ceasefire, facilitate the swap of prisoners of wars, and reopen roads for both humanitarian corridors as well as trade between the two sides. Irro reiterated that the peace and tranquility that Somaliland enjoyed over the past 30 years meant a lot to the stability in the Horn of Africa. He made an appeal to UN envoy, 𝐌𝐫. 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐰𝐚𝐧, to support Somaliland when it comes to building robust security agencies in Somaliland in a bid to prevent and respond to threats in the Horn. SL President said that his administration is ready to have close working ties with UN, other agencies and donor countries so as to reinforce peace and stability, implement reforms within government institutions, and that Somaliland must make progress.
