Washington–The United States has no long and short term plans to formally recognize the republic of Somaliland as an independent state. This was disclosed by Somalia’s ambassador to the United States, Mr. Dahir Arab after holding high level meetings with US officials.
Mr. Dahir made the remarks in an interview with Voice of America (VOA) specially the Somali service. He made clear that Somalia will send a request to the US government to directly channel US Aid to Somali government instead of channeling aid to the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO). Mr. Omar said: ” The US government supports logistically Danab Brigade, a Special Operations Unit of Somali National Army. It also pays its monthly salaries to the Danab forces.” This comes at a time when members of republican Congress are spearheading efforts that US President Donald Trump is planning to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent statehood as part of his 2025 project. Somaliland seceded from Somalia in 1991 but it has not gained a formal recognition from the international community despite enjoying peace and tranquility for the past 30 years.
