The United States has offered a significant bounty of up to 1 million US dollars for individuals responsible for the attack on Kismayo airport on September 4, 2025, which targeted US soldiers and assets. The Justice Reward Program of the United States has announced the bounty and will award it to anyone who provides information leading to the recognition or arrest of those responsible for the attack. The militant group Al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack, in which their fighters used live bullets and rockets to target US and African soldiers stationed at the airport. According to the US government, the attack did not result in any human casualties or property damage. The US Department of Justice website has posted a statement urging anyone with information on the individuals involved in the assault to submit it to the Justice Reward Program, stating that their information will make it easier to receive rewards and rehabilitation. The US soldiers have a military base near Kismayo Airport where they provide training to Jubaland and Somali Federal Government security forces, specifically the Danab Special Elite Forces who are trained to combat Al-Shabab. Al-Shabab is responsible for numerous terrorist attacks in Somalia and neighboring countries, resulting in thousands of human casualties, including American lives.
