After nine months of abduction ordeal which took place in Moyaale town in Marsabit region in Kenya, the two South Korean nationals appeared on a video clip which showed that they are alive but live in an appalling situtaion in Somalia.
The new video clip which was spread on social media on Monday dated 28th of April, 2025, the two missionaries David Ian Lee and Soddohdiss Hiwi Sok Cheon appeared on the video.
Suspected Al-shabab militants kidnapped the missionaries on the 12th of August, 2024 from their residence in Odda village which lies in the border between Ethiopia and Kenya.
The new video which lasts three minutes, Lee appealed to South Korean government to intervene the situation so as to immediately be released.
Lee said: “For many days, we are coping with fear and uncertainty of life. We are in a dangerous situation. We are innocent individuals.”
Cheon was sitting next to Lee but she seemed to be in a terrifying situation.
Lee requested from South Korean government to take part in the efforts which are aimed to secure the release of the two missionaries in order to safely return back home.
Kenyan security officials believe that the video was released by the militant group of Al-Shabab.
They said that the goal behind the video is to pressurize the South Korean government to accept the negotiations.
Many agencies conducted investigation on the abduction last year which led eight suspects in connection of the kidnapping to be arrested including six Ethiopian nationals.
Those arrested in connection of the abduction remain under police custody while investigations are still underway.
The South Korean embassy in Nairobi has not so far issued a statement regarding the video which was disseminated by the militant group of Al-Shabab.
